Information regarding the 362nd Fighter Group
Description
An account of the resource
Items in this collection are a part of the 362nd Fighter Group history. This means that items can pertain to the 377th Fighter Squadron (F.S.), the 378th F.S., and the 379th Squadron. Items that pertain to more than one F.S. will be placed here, even if one of those squadrons is the 379th. Whether the group commander was Colonel Morton Magoffin or Colonel Joseph Laughlin at the time of creation will not relegate items to this collection or that of the 379th F.S.; it is the content and context of the item itself.

The Tail Designations on a P-47
Subject
The topic of the resource
The P-47 tail was painted to represent the type of plane, the Fighter Squadron, and the Fighter Group it was a part of
Description
An account of the resource
The markings on the vertical stabilizer of a plane had two distinctions. The bottom stripe delineated what type of plane it was; the black stripe was on all P-47s in the war. The tip of the fin designated which fighter group the plane belonged to; fins in the 362nd Fighter Group were painted red. The rudder was painted in the color of the plane's fighter squadron; yellow was the color of the 379th Fighter Squadron. The horizontal stabilizer had similar distinctions. The number below the stripe on the vertical stabilizer is the plane's serial number. The number shown is the serial number from the plane Colonel Joseph Laughlin was flying in early 1945.

When they were not training, flying missions, sleeping, or eating, pilots needed downtime to unwind. Captain George Rarey did so by sketching. In this illustration, Captain Rarey catches an easy-going face on then-Major Laughlin as members of the squadron slump around in the background. Captain Rarey used whatever paper he could get his hands on for these sketches. For this one, he used a formerly Restricted piece of information: the August 1943 Communication codes for East Coast Headquarters.

Colonel Joseph Laughlin was credited with dropping his payload closest to the target, giving him most of the credit for breaking the dam
Description
An account of the resource
The before and after shots of the Linder Dam show the short term effect of the damage done by squadrons of the 362nd Fighter Group. The 378th and 379th squadrons took part in the bombings, with Colonel Laughlin leading the way. The pilots were aiming for the sluice gate, an extremely narrow portion of the dam, and they were mostly effective. Colonel Laughlin was given the most credit as his bombs were dropped closest to the sluice. A third squadron was called in, but by the time they arrived, the water was already pouring out of the now large hole in the dam.
This action had been personally requested by General Patton, and it was such a huge news story that within 24 hours, they were announcing the success over the radio. The 362nd's former commander, Colonel Morton Magoffin, was lying in a hospital when the bombing of the dam was announced. All they said about the mission was that it was completed by a "Thunderbolt" fighter group. He didn't even have to ask; he knew it was the 362nd.
