Colonel Joseph Laughlin received a pistol from a German Officer after nearly 20,000 troops surrendered
Description
An account of the resource
The XIX Tactical Air Command (TAC) were very effective in their missions to bomb and disrupt the German lines, especially the P-47s in the 362nd Fighter Group. Upon the surrender of German troops at the Beaugency Bridge in France, officers handed over their pistols in capitulation. In recognition of his groups' successes, General Otto Weyland had one of the officer's pistols sent to Colonel Laughlin.

Extra armor plates to protect the pilot on a P-47
Description
An account of the resource
The P-47 Thunderbolt was a heavy fighter aircraft, maxing out at 17,000 lbs. Part of this weight was owed to the extra protection given to the pilot. Armor plates were installed behind the seat and on each side of the cockpit below the window. In several interviews with former pilots, the plane is credited with not only saving their lives, but allowing them to walk away from an accident without injury.

Colonel Joseph Laughlin was credited with dropping his payload closest to the target, giving him most of the credit for breaking the dam
Description
An account of the resource
The before and after shots of the Linder Dam show the short term effect of the damage done by squadrons of the 362nd Fighter Group. The 378th and 379th squadrons took part in the bombings, with Colonel Laughlin leading the way. The pilots were aiming for the sluice gate, an extremely narrow portion of the dam, and they were mostly effective. Colonel Laughlin was given the most credit as his bombs were dropped closest to the sluice. A third squadron was called in, but by the time they arrived, the water was already pouring out of the now large hole in the dam.
This action had been personally requested by General Patton, and it was such a huge news story that within 24 hours, they were announcing the success over the radio. The 362nd's former commander, Colonel Morton Magoffin, was lying in a hospital when the bombing of the dam was announced. All they said about the mission was that it was completed by a "Thunderbolt" fighter group. He didn't even have to ask; he knew it was the 362nd.

Colonel Laughlin understood that the pilots were only as good as their grounds crew; without them they would never get off the ground
Description
An account of the resource
Colonel Laughlin, pictured here with grounds crew members of the 379th Fighter Squadron, knew he could rely on his men to do their jobs. He often credited the success of the group to the men who never got the glory because without their skill and expertise in repairing and arming the planes properly, the 362nd Fighter Group pilots would not have been able to perform at the best of their abilities. The only known member of this crew is crew chief Sergeant Raymond J. Chodor, pictured far left.

From left, 1st Lt. Joe Lane, Colonel Laughlin, 1st Lt. John Hill, and an unknown pilot stand in front the the chateau outside of Reims. Colonel Laughlin managed to "acquire" it, and it was large enough to house all of the pilots of the 362nd Fighter Group. These were the most comfortable accommodations the men would see during the war, and they never wanted to leave. The officers appear to have just come from the airstrip, as all of them are wearing their flight suits, with the two officers in front, both from the 377th Fighter Squadron, also wearing their leather jackets.

Colonel Laughlin is all smiles as he looks out onto the field full of men and planes. He appears in his flight suit with his uniform underneath, ready to take to the skies. The checkerboard cowl color indicates this was taken towards the end of the war; it had been painted on the same cowl covers that Captain George Rarey had painted before combat begin for the 362nd Fighter Group. Captain George Rarey was KIA on June 27, 1944.

Colonel Laughlin takes time to commemorate his first plane with the nose art painted by Captain George Rarey
Description
An account of the resource
Colonel Laughlin talks and smiles as he poses in front of his first P-47. Although he had already been called Five by Five (for looking five feet tall and five feet wide) the elephant with the four leaf clover was a surprise. Captain George Rarey had painted it on the cowl of his plane while he was gone from the base. This was his reaction upon his return. The elephant, a caricature of Dumbo, holds a four leaf clover instead of a feather in a nod to Colonel Laughlin's Irish heritage. The black color on the cowl indicates this was before the men had entered combat.
